here is no doubt that Rio is the ‘picture postcard’ of Brazil for international tourism, but there is more on offer beyond its undeniable charms and beauties. The city is located in a state that has a reputation for the diversity of its attractions and geographical proximity. The major tourist cities are, at most three hours from each other, with easy access by tarmacked and well sign posted roads. Infrastructure is good and visitors have various options including international hotel chains, excellent cuisine, as well as ports and airports to make access easier. The highlight here is the diversity of its attractions. The options are divided between mountains and beaches. Besides the numerous natural attractions which are spread over six tourist destinations - it is necessary to visit many historical destinations that keep alive the culture and traditions that are present in food, festivals and architecture. In the ecological sector, the State of Rio de Janeiro guards many treasures that stimulate adventure and ecotourism, all based on environmental preservation and sustainability. Bird watching, horseback riding and extreme sports are some of the activities that are possible in the mountain regions. Only a state like Rio de Janeiro can provide experiences like this that can exceed expectations with its unique beauty and diversity. he Green Coast (Costa Verde), in the south of the state, boasts more than two thousand beaches and 365 islands - one for every day of the year. The region entices tourists to lounge around lazily on the warm sand whilst listening to the relaxing sound of the waves. Formed by the cities of Angra dos Reis, Ilha Grande, Mangaratiba, Paraty, Rio Claro and Itaguaí, the region was once considered as a landmark during the foundation of the country, having housed one of the first colonized lands in Brazil. As an expression of refinement on the Brazilian coast, Angra dos Reis is an almost mandatory paradise for lovers of natural beauty. Located 150 kilometres from the state capital, the city has a broad menu of resorts, hotels and guest houses, which offer various activities, including all day boat tours, nature trails along rivers and down rapids, as well as extreme sports such as abseiling, mountain biking and rafting. Ilha Grande, in turn, is known for being in one of the most beautiful coastal areas in the world. A fine example is the beach of Lopes Mendes, which has been in countless lists of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Its popularity with tourists is due to the surrounding wild vegetation with almond and apricot trees and its crystal clear and transparent waters. The environment is completely deserted. There are no buildings, piers for mooring boats etc. therefore the beach remains quiet. Here, nature reigns supreme.

Aventureiro is another special beach on the island. A small strip of sand plays host to a large coconut tree that, at some point in its life, grew at a different angle of 90 degrees. The tree is shown on local postcards. The beach has a gazebo and is a 30-minute trek away. From here you can have a view of the beaches and the surrounding forest, with its green palm trees, that add a fine mix of colour to the area. A fishing village makes up a harmonious setting, where friendly people are ready to receive tourists with warm smiles. The island is accessible by boat, with sails from Angra dos Reis, Jacareí and Mangaratiba.

esende, Itatiaia, Quatis, Penedo, Visconde de Mauá and Porto Real form part of the Region of Black Needles (Agulhas Negras), an exuberant mix of vegetation, waterfalls and paradisiacal sites with an interesting rock formations. Located in the center-south of the state of Rio de Janeiro, the region takes its name from the Agulhas Negras Peak, located in the Itatiaia Park. At 2791 metres, it is the highest point in the state. In addition to the Agulhas Negras Peak, the park offers many other attractions such as the Blue Lagoon, a natural lake formed by the river Campo Belo, the Bridal Veil waterfall, with a fall of 40 metres; Montanha do Couto Peak, the second highest point in the park, rising 2680 metres above sea level; and Prateleiras has rock formations with plateaus. In the region, two cities are mainly responsible for the heavy flow of tourists: Penedo (165 km from the capital) and Visconde de Mauá (200 km). The first, has a strong Finnish influence, which is reflected in its architecture and local culture. It stands out with its artisanal chocolates, rustic atmosphere and Nordic cottages. Fruit trees colour the streets and give a foreign air to the city. A popular tourist town, Penedo has good facilities, with hotels and restaurants that host their visitors masterfully.

In Paraty, located 245 km from the capital, beaches are wild and isolated, with access only by trail or boat. These characteristics give the impression that the place is secret. Antigo and Antiguinhos beaches, surrounded by green mountains, have soft sand and crystalline waters. In the historic centre, houses in neoclassical and baroque styles and cobblestone streets give a rustic feel to the area. With great infrastructure, the city has excellent hotels and various restaurants of varying cuisine. One of the most popular drinks is cachaça. The city also stands out for hosting the International Literary Festival of ParatyFLIP, which attracts national and international celebraties every year. The fair is usually organized in the first half of July and promotes nearly 200 events, including shows, literature discussions and book readings.

ramed by large farms of colonial and historic architecture, the Coffee Valley (Vale do Café) Region is a legacy left by the coffee industry, the main product of the Brazilian economy during the 18th and 19th centuries. In total, 15 cities form the region, with the most popular being Valença, Vassouras and Miguel Pereira. Besides being able to visit hundreds of farms, tourists can explore the houses of the coffee barons and the slave quarters, which are preserved but also tell the history and show the birth of the country’s culture. During the month of July, the region hosts the Café Valley Festival, a phenomenon that has music concerts on farms, concerts in public squares and supports music workshops for local children. Another event that is gaining more and more momentum is “Coffee, Cachaça and Chorinho”. With gastronomic appeal, the event includes visits to historic farms for tasting, like the colonial cafe morning, with many cakes, bread, milk and soft cheeses, where most of the products are produced on site. Visconde de Mauá has a bucolic and welcoming setting for those who want to isolate themselves from the madness and frenetic life of the big cities. The variety of

attractions are the Glaziou Garden, the Cultural Foundation Lea Pentagna and Vista Alegre Farm, which was one of the most important in the 19th century during the Empire. Close to the State capital, Vassouras - with palaces, houses, parks and gardens – here we can stop and go back in time. After all, almost 200 years ago, the country was still a Portuguese colony, and Vassouras (Brooms, in English) - whose name derives from the tupeiçava bush, which is used for making broom heads – was also known as “Coffee Princess”. At the time (1850) the city was the world’s leading coffee producer. Bruno Wanderley/Petrópolis CVB

the natural scenery of Visconde de Mauá is an invitation to well-being. Through contact with nature, you can escape from your normal routine and do various activities that promote contemplation, like hiking, horseback riding, exploring waterfalls or swimming in rivers and extreme sports such as free flights, mountain biking and canoeing. The local cuisine is heavily fish based, with trout being the most popular and it forms the basis for many dishes in the local restaurants. On cold days, treat yourself to a fondue or one of the soups with varied flavours around the fire that is lit in the city centre. The Coffee Valley is an ideal as a retreat in rural tranquillity or for eco-tours. Miguel Pereira, just 115 kilometres from the capital, boasts waterfalls, small churches, rum and crafts. For its high mountains and hills, paragliding is a sport that attracts many visitors. Not to mention mountain biking, jeeps and the pentathlon, which also attracts many tourists due to the terrain of the area. For those traveling with a family, the Javary Lake offers pedal boats and small boat rides. Other attractions worth a look are the Railway Museum, the waterfalls of Vera Cruz and the Cachaça Museum. Be sure to taste the traditional tomato bread, a homemade delicacy that is only found in the region. Through its architecture, the history of the Coffee Cycle peak can be seen easily from Valença, a city located 148 kilometres from the state capital. All of the farms, cathedrals, parks, squares, monuments and houses, tell a little of the day-to-day lives of people that used to live in the region. The town has retained its traditions, its festivals and its customs from the golden coffee times. Among the main

he region that once hosted the Portuguese royal court, Imperial Green Hills (Serra Verde Imperial) has a pleasant mountainous climate, which is why it has become the main refuge for locals seeking colder weather. That’s when many can take advantage of the stylish winter clothes and warm up by the fireplace. A nice glass of wine and a cheese fondue or, for the most romantic, a chocolate fondue with fruit. Shopping is also a popular in the region. Textiles and handmade delicacies are popular with almost every tourist who visits the region. With excellent hotels, the Imperial Green Hills is

responsible for producing the most diverse types of specialty beers, which harmonize perfectly with all that the State of Rio offers. The Brewery Route passes through the cities of Petropolis, Teresopolis, Nova Friburgo, Cachoeiras de Macacu and Guapimirim. In addition to the major brands, they also offer craft breweries that show a little of locals customs and culture. People love the drink. A good trip is to start in Nova Friburgo (131 kilometres from the city of Rio de Janeiro) and go to the Ranz, Rock Valley and BarĂŁo breweries. In the city centre, there is a plethora of shoe, clothes, handbags and makeup shops that can be found.

Petropolis, founded in 1843 by Emperor D. Pedro II, was used to shelter the imperial family from the intense heat of the state capital Rio. Petropolis is only 59 kilometres from the city of Rio and offers a mix of heritage and ecotourism. Among the main attractions are the Imperial Museum, the Cathedral St. Peter of Alcantara, the Crystal Palace, the Quitandinha Palace and the house of Santos Dumont. On the outskirts, Itaipava stands out for its sophisticated aura and haute cuisine. Don’t miss a visit to the local breweries: Bohemia, Itaipava and Cidade Imperial. Colonised by Germans, Petropolis organizes the Bauernfest during the month of July. It takes its style from German festivals and features folk dancing, choirs, traditional bands (such as the Germanic Musical Band from Blumenau), beer contests, ethnic food and much more.

While Petropolis is the city of D. Pedro II, Teresopolis (which is 87 km from Rio) is the city of Teresa (Teresa Cristina, wife of D. Pedro II). Bucolic landscapes, street markets and charming restaurants are some of the characteristics of this city, which is full of charm. With attractions for all tastes, Serra dos Órgãos is one of the highlights of the region. Waterfalls, pools, trails and picnic areas are some of the attractions that the park offers. Easily accessible, the Soberbo Belvedere has one of the most impressive sights of the region. The peak Dedo de Deus (Finger of God) is a challenge for the more radical of tourists. rom Guanabara Bay if you look to one side you can see the state capital, Rio de Janeiro, and to the other you will see Niteroi, a “sister city” that reveals a blue-water coastline, scenic views with breathless landscapes, centuries-old fortresses and architectural works of great historical and cultural value, designed by the greatest exponent of national architecture, Oscar Niemeyer. The former state capital is also an important economic, cultural and gastronomic centre. There, the beaches of Camboinhas, Piratininga, Itaipu and Itacoatiara are highlights. On the other hand, the bay beaches such as Icaraí, Boa Viagem, Flechas, São Francisco, Charitas, Jurujuba and Adão e Eva are great for walks and outdoor activities. If you love history, then you can’t miss the fortress tour, comprising the largest complex in the country. You will visit the Fortress of Santa Cruz da Barra and Fort St. Louis or Pico, from the 18th Century. Itaboraí, a city close to Niteroi, is popular for its cultural and historical significance. It has been the setting for novels and movies, especially in Marechal Floriano Square, formerly Matriz Square. It also boasts the largest stage in the city, where there are artistic and cultural events such as the traditional Festival of Kings and a Book Fair. It is in the historic city centre that is siècle building that resists time. Another relevant aspect of the city is the oldest paleontological site in Brazil, on the shores of São José Lake. Nature lovers should not miss the National Park Restinga de Jurujuba, one of the country’s protected areas administered by the Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation (ICMBio). With a large number of on-going scientific research projects, the National Park extends over 44 km along the coastline between the cities of Macae, Carapebus and Quissamã. Its ecosystem brings together salt marshes, wetlands and the Atlantic Forest and there are more than 20 lakes. Campo dos Goytacases has always been synonymous with colonial farms, historic mansions and sumptuous manors. It is endowed with beautiful natural attractions like beaches, lagoons, environmental reserves, rivers and waterfalls. The main beach is Farol de São Tomé, 50 km long, where there is a 47 metre high lighthouse, which

was opened in 1882, and is where the Environmental Protection Area of Lagamar was created. This is also the place where the Desengano State Park is found with its rich flora and fauna. Among its main attractions are the Desengano Peak, a 1,761m high mountain, the Mateus Peak, of 1,576 m, and the Pedra da Agulha. Casimiro de Abreu gained national fame in 1980 as a esoteric area, especially because people believed that an extra-terrestrial spaceship coming from Jupiter was going to land there. The city’s name comes from the poet and novelist Casimiro de Abreu and his house is now a museum with an auditorium, library, art room and small exhibition. The city has waterfalls and rapids on the Macaé River, where you can swim, go rafting and fishing. The best beaches are Praião, with greenish water, and Prainha, at the mouth of São João River. Make sure you include the city of Macaé in your itinerary. Known as the “Princess of the Atlantic”, it has gained international status due to oil production and the discovery of a Pre-Salt oil field off its coast. It has become known as the “National Oil Capital”. There are also historic monuments such as the Marechal Hermes Fort that originates from the 18th Century,

Imbetiba Lighthouse, from 1880, and the Church of Sant’Anna, from 1896. The beaches extend along the 23km coastline. Highlights include Lagomar, São José do Barreto, Barra de Macaé, Forte, Imbetiba, Prainha do Farol, Campista, Pecado and the most famous, the Cavaleiros Beach. Quissamã stands by the warm, sweet and dark waters of Tatu’s Cove, one of the main natural attractions and the beaches of Farol and Barra do Furado are frequented by surfers. In the historic part, the Cultural and Historic Complex Fazenda Machadinha, created in 2009, is formed by the ruins of a big farm house, warehouse, the chapel of Nossa Senhora do Patrocínio and slave quarters. One of the highlights is the Memorial Machadinha. To see more details of the buildings, from the 19th Century, there is a tour that includes several historical attractions and monuments. Rio das Ostras, in northern part of Rio de Janeiro State, has beaches and historical buildings, such as Poço de Pedras, made by slaves in the 18th Century, and the Church of Nossa Senhora da Conceição, also built by slaves. The Whale Square (Praça da Baleia) is a leisure area where there is a sculpture of a 20m long humpback whale. In the Costazul Beach waterfront are some of the main attractions of the city such as the Pier, an ideal spot to watch the sunrise and go fishing. There are 28kms of beaches. Santa Maria Madalena is one of the entrance gateways to the Desengano State Park, with its great natural forest and waterfalls. It is definitely worth a visit to the stone craft workshops run by young locals and maintained by the Association of Mineral Producers of Santa Maria Madalena. Other attractions of the park are the Torre Lookout and Desengano Rock. There is also the ‘Way of the Cold Lands’ (Caminho das Terras Frias), a rural track with natural attractions organized by local producers that are very welcoming. The famous Brazilian comedian, Dercy Gonçalves was born here. Also, don’t miss Pedra do Dubois, Cachoeira do Escorrega, Cachoeirão, Represa da Tudelândia, Represa do Saudoso and Horto Florestal.

surfers, a good tip is the small and well-preserved José Gonçalves Beach, where the waves are bigger. For those who want to escape the crowds that flood Búzios in high season, the beaches of Azeda (Sour) and Azedinha are more sheltered and quieter. The name comes from the colour of its waters, which are lime green. Access to Azeda Beach is by a street from the Ossos Beach. In the right corner there is a small trail that leads to Azedinha. Among the food options is seafood. Enjoy fish, oysters, mussels and shrimp, served in kiosks by the beach. Just 38 kilometres from Búzios, Arraial do Cabo also has its own areas of paradise. Unlike other beaches, the sea in Arraial is an intense blue. The temperature of the water is between 6º and 18ºC and Arraial do Cabo and Cabo Frio have the coolest beaches in all of southeastern Brazil, quite different from the average for the region, where the temperature remains around 20ºC. Considered as the “most perfect beach in Brazil” by the National Institute for Space Research (INPE), Ilha do Farol (Lighthouse Island) attracts swimmers who also take advantage of the natural beauty by taking photographs. If the marine life makes your eyes sparkle, then you will be sure to enjoy yourself. Arraial do Cabo is also known as the Capital for Diving in the country. Among the best beaches for diving are Prainhas in Pontal do Atalaia and Grande Beach. Often, in January, it’s possible to see penguins on the edge of Grande Beach. The destination also offers boat trips, where you can get to the Azul Grotto or to Marinha Island. But beware: permission is required to access the area. Boasting 15 preserved beaches all with good facilities, Rio das Ostras is the ideal place to enjoy a little rest mixed with a hectic city. In the summer, it is better to walk to the left of the beach where it is generally less crowded. On its dunes, sand boarding is popular, descending down the dunes on a wooden plank. Canasvieiras – Twenty-seven kilometres away from the city centre and at just over two kilometres long, the urbanized beach and brings together natural beauty and total infrastructure. It has few waves and is more popular for families. In summer it is advisable to arrive early to find a place on the narrow strip of sand.

Serras Catarinenses:

beauty, adventure and excitement

W

ith the drop of the temperature during the winter months, the influx of tourists from across the country towards the Serra do Rio do Rastro in Santa Catarina raises. They are all attracted by the expectation of enjoying, - in the coldest region of the country - the spectacle of frost and snow. In addition to stunning scenery and friendly cities, the winter season, which promises to extend into the long weekend of September 7th, brings about other treasures. Serra Catarinense is now established as a tourism destination. Every year, the beauty of the region and the diversity of natural attractions appeal more and more to tourists. The Motoneve (Snowmobile) Festival, for example, held this year in Lages, attracted over 20,000 Moto bikers to the region. Lages also promoted its traditional Pinion Festival. A total of 17 small towns, including São Joaquim, Bom Jesus da Serra, Urubici and Urupema, offer a landscape with pines (typical tree), canyons that are more than 700 meters high, waterfalls, rock formations and 15 wineries, some of them open to the public, such as Vila Francioni. The famous Pedra Furada (Holed Stone), at Morro do Campestre, in Urubici, last year welcomed 290,000 visitors.

Serra Rio do Rastro

Rural Tourism

In the main farm hotels, typical of rural tourism, there is a complete and well established schedule for tourists, with horseback riding, fishing, hiking, barbecues cooked on open fires and traditional festivals with Italian and regional cuisine. All this with contagious hospitality that is able to captivate visitors of all ages. Access - Access to the Serra do Rio do Rastro, from Santa Catarina’s coast, suggests a visit to Laguna, a traditional old town where Anita Garibaldi, the Brazilian wife and comrade-in-arms of Italian revolutionary Giuseppe Garibaldi, lived. Before driving up the mountain, tourists can also enjoy Health Tourism at Termas (spa) do Gravatal, with its warm waters. In the city of Tubarão, make sure to take a train ride and visit the Railway Museum. Leaving the coast behind, the scenary changes and soon unveils stunning scenery with peaks of around 2000 meters. A snaking narrow lane, with no laybys, does require attention when driving. And as you move up the mountain, the temperature drops quickly.

Bom Jesus da Serra - The eco-tours of off-roading, horseback riding and the canyons of Laranjeiras, Ronda and Funil are some of the attractions of this region. At the Ecoresort Rio do Rastro, travel agencies offer many tours. Recently, Azul and Tam signed a partnership with the Ecoresort to offer tour packages, including flights with departures from São Paulo or Rio de Janeiro. Urubici – At a distant 83 kilometres from Bom Jesus da Serra, a town of just over 10,000, it is transformed by the arrival of thousands of tourists during the winter season. Just as the snow begins to fall, the arrival of tourists triples quickly. The region has natural attractions such as the Avencal waterfall, with a drop of more than 100 meters and it also has a 270 metre zip line that crosses the waterfall. The inscriptions of ancient civilizations are also worth noting. he main famous attraction is Pedra Furada (Holed Stone). Lages - Rural Tourism is the main attraction. The city has 3,300 beds in hotels and farms. The Department of Tourism has invested in infrastructure and training. According to Secretary of Tourism, Flavio Agostini, the region stands out for wine tourism and rural tourism. The schedule of events includes Natal Felicidade (Christmas Happiness), which last year had 400,000 visitors, the Snowmobile Festival, the Native Song Festival and Pinion Festival, which was relaunched this year. São Joaquim – São Joaquim is one of the most famous cities in the mountainous region not only due to its low temperatures, leading it to be considered the coldest city in Brazil, but also for its apple production – it is the largest producer in the country - and in 2016 will be promoting the National Apple Festival. Near the city, be sure to visit the Villa Francioni winery, which produces the famous high altitudes wine. Urupema - Located 1425 meters above sea level, the city invests in its Rural Tourism. One of the most visited places is the Barreiro Farm, founded in 1782 and it offers lodgings and typical cuisine. Among the attractions are trout fishing and a waterfall that freezes, which funnily enough is called ‘Waterfall That Freezes’ in Morro das Torres. March 2016

Verde Mar Coast: the charms of the seaside

I

magine a travel itinerary with a variety of unique attractions capable of seducing the most demanding of tourists. The Verde Mar Coast region is made up of ten cities: Porto Belo, Camboriú, Piçarras, Itajaí, Itapema, Navegantes, Luiz Alves, Penha, Bombinhas and Ilhota. Each one has its own characteristics and diverse attractions.

Bombinhas

Aureo Berger

Porto Belo

Pata da Cobra

Balneário Camboriú – This is the favourite place for Argentines as, during the summer, they turn it into a “neighbourhood” from Buenos Aires and the city becomes very busy. During the day there is only fun to be had: to enjoy the 8.5 kilometre long central beach. Others prefer the remote beaches or even to venture out on a boat trip around the bays and coves. Next to it is the nudist Pinho Beach, which always arouses curiosity. As night falls the bars and restaurants on Atlantic Avenue fill up with people. Camboriú houses ten beaches and offers possibilities for all types. Families are also present in the south, in Laranjeiras, with calm waters and good facilities. Along the same road, a good choice is Estaleirinho. The beautiful 16 kilometre long panoramic Interpraias Highway, provides access to the South beaches and it is also possible by cable car that connects the downtown beaches. In the off-season, it is a popular tour for groups and senior public tours.

Qlitoral

Sea Museum

Bombinhas – It’s name comes from the noise produced when walking on the sands, which are rich in quartz crystals, causing small pops, like small bombs, this helps Bombinhas be one of the most popular beaches in the state. The site has good tourist facilities, with hotels, restaurants and shopping centres as well as traditional water sports. The region is known as the regions ecological diving capital. With a total of 16 beaches (Atalaia, Bombas, Bombinhas, Canto Grande, Cardoso, Conceição, Embrulho, Galheta, Lagoa, Lagoinha, Mariscal, Quatro Ilhas, Retiro dos Padres, Ribeiro, Sepultura, Zimbros, Prainha) hides one of the most fascinating underwater sceneries with coral reefs and shipwrecks, like the freighter, LILI (1957), on the island of Galés. For the radicals among us, during summer, it is common to see paragliders taking off from the Macaco Hill. Hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, craft shopping, fishing and visits to museums are other year-round activities.

Porto Belo

Camboriú

Porto Belo - One of the biggest cruise ports on the Brazilian coast, Porto Belo has an island of the same name, which enchants with its paradisiacal beauty. The island draws attention to its unspoilt nature and offers convenience with a good range of facilities for its visitors. The ecological track “Pedra da Cruz” is the ideal tour to visit the area. The tour guides, who experienced the island’s occupation, have curious stories and legends to tell. Diving is also special here; in some places you will observe a multitude of animal species. Kayaking, water-skiing, zip lines, speedboat rides, banana boat are just some of the other options on offer.

Itajaí – Close to Balneário de Camboriú, Itajaí is made famous by its port. The city is now investing in a new marina to improve its infrastructure. Be sure to visit Brava Beach, one of the most loved by surfers. Brava is the home to the young crowd, who arrive in search of excitement and fun. In Cabeçudas, take time to stroll through the surrounding area and look at the beautiful colonial mansions. To enjoy a quieter environment, head to the beaches of Morcego, between Brava and Cabeçudas; and Atalaia, the waves are good and local surfers frequent it. Also worth a visit, is the Old Market, a mix of cafe, restaurant, craft and spices shops and it is right next to the Fish Market.

Penha and Navegantes – Stretching approximately six kilometres, the Armação Beach in Penha enchants tourists with its clear and transparent waters. It is one of beaches that has an abundance of large, expensive real estate. São Miguel Beach, on the other hand, has calm water, ideal for swimming and good for families with children. Surfers, for their part, prefer Grande Beach. From there you can see Ponta da Vigia, the Lighthouse, and you can monitor the comings and goings of fishermen on the coast, with their fishing tackle, or you can just pick shellfish on the rocks. Navegantes, has an airport with regular flights from Rio de Janeiro, Porto Alegre and São Paulo that connects the region to the rest of Brazil. Located in the region, the beach of Gravatá is the busiest in the region with bustling nightlife and many bars and restaurants.

Governador Celso Ramos - Prolong your trip and take a tour to Governador Celso Ramos. The region occupies a beautiful peninsula that divides the coast into 23 beautiful beaches that are good for snorkelling, windsurfing, jet skiing and surfing. Some have good facilities like Palmas Beach; others are completely deserted, like Ilhéus and Bananeiras. The region also includes the biological reserve Marinha do Arvoredo. The Island of Anhatomirim is a crowded tourist spot and is home to forts and fortresses such as Santa Cruz. The accommodation highlights are the hotels and luxury resorts such as the Resort Ponta dos Ganchos that welcome artists and personalities. SANTUR

Piçarras – Found on the northern stretch of the Santa Catarina coast, the city has the advantage of having one of the most beautiful coastlines in the state, with seven kilometres of beaches with calm waters and two islands (Feia and Itacolomi). The city has as many tourist attractions and special attention must be given to its waters and because of these calm waters, is an excellent choice for the whole family. The beach is considered as one of the cleanest in the state. Itapema - With calm and crystalline seas, Itapema Beach shares its space with major hotels, bars and restaurants. Meia Beach, the largest, best known and most frequented by tourists, is a popular beach. For those preferring quieter places to visit, a good tip is to head for Costão or Canto Beach. A must-see Culture, shopping and gastronomy T

he influence of German, Italian and Azorean immigrants, among others, is present in the areas festivals, food and architecture in cities such as Blumenau, Joinville and Pomerode. If its shopping you are after, then it is necessary to include a stop in a city like Brusque, famous for its hundreds of fabric factories and with some attractive cost prices too. Lastly, Ilhota is known as the capital of underwear.

Pomerode

If you want to experience a piece of Germany, then there is no need to cross the Atlantic, just take a trip to Pomerode. Located in the European Valley, it has been recognized since 1980, as the most German city in Brazil. The city has a rich cultural patrimony inherited from its first colonizers, who arrived in the region around 1860, coming mostly from Pomerania, a region in the north of Germany. With just 27,000 inhabitants, it is possible to see the culture and the German customs that have been passed down from generation to generation, in houses with half-timbered rooftops adorned by flower gardens. In January, the region promotes Pomerana Party, a ten-day festival, which is washed down with plenty of beer, music, dance and typical food that shows the visitor all the wealth of the legacy of the German immigrants. Furniture, porcelain and crystal factories attract tourists to the various showrooms to buy decorative items, handicrafts and food products.

The Italian culture is featured in the city of Nova Trento, located near Blumenau. Here, you can taste the best of Italian cuisine and visit the Sanctuary of Mother Pauline Sister, the first beatified Brazilian saint. In July, the city promotes a party for the saint that attracts more than 180,000 faithful devotees and tourists. For those who enjoy flowers and gardens, a good tip is to take a 123-kilometre trip to Joinville, also known as the city of flowers.

Pomerode’s neighbour, the city of Blumenau, which in October promotes the traditional Oktoberfest, also has a whole festive agenda referring to German culture. In summer, the highlight is the Sommerfest - the Summer Party of Blumenau, with musicals, dancing, typical food and beer. The event takes place in German Village Park and offers numerous attractions such as exhibitions and parades of folk groups in addition to the Hunting and Shooting Club. In the 2014 edition, the audience got into the spirit of this ‘summer Oktoberfest’ and drank 35,350 litters of beer. Makito

German Cuisine

Rich gastronomy - Santa Catarina’s cuisine is strongly influenced by the European colonization. Dishes such as duck with red cabbage, polenta (corn dish), apple strudel and other delicacies of German cuisine share the menu with shellfish and seafood, not to mention the lamb barbecue. All this is accompanied by wine or local beer produced in the region. There are options for all tastes and budgets. Brazil, your next destination It is no coincidence that Germans are very interested in visiting Brazil and discovering the charms and attractions of this destination, which is considered the main tourist destination in South America. Germany is among the main markets for Brazilian tourism promotion, as it is considered as a priority country for EMBRATUR. According to the Statistical Yearbook of Tourism data, released in 2014, Germany is the sixth country that exports the most tourists to Brazil and the first among European countries, with more than 240,000 visitors a year. These figures are due to the fact that Brazil has products that arouse great interest from the German market. This is the case of ecotourism, nature tourism and adventure tourism. Amazonas, Foz do Iguaçu, Pantanal, Lençóis Maranhenses, all these destinations add to the imagination. A factor that greatly contributed to the growth of nature tourism was the adoption of regulatory measures of international standard by specialized agencies, according to determination of ABETA, which is responsible for drawing up regulations for companies in this segment. As a result, the procedures have are safer, have added security and serve as a reference for European operators who work with this kind of holiday. Also,we cannot forget the cultural ties between Brazil and Germany that have remained for centuries. In the South and Southeast, the marks left by the colonization of German immigrants in the 19th century can be found in food, architecture and even parties in cities

like Blumenau, Gramado, Petropolis and many others. There are traditional festivals (such as the Oktoberfest, in October, in Blumenau) that receive more than 500,000 tourists. Also in Santa Catarina, in cities like Pomerode, the German language is taughtin schools. Eyeing this growing market, airlines have sought to expand the number of flights between Brazil and Germany. This is the case of Condor, a company that is under the Tomas Cook umbrella, which since the end of last year has started operating two regular flights between Rio de Janeiro and Frankfurt, as well as three others linking north-eastern cities such as Fortaleza, Salvador and Recife also to Frankfurt. The company is studying implementing new routes soon from other north-eastern state capitals. Lufthansa also has regular flights between Brazil and Germany. The interest of the Brazilian peoplein Germanyis also reciprocal and the number of overnight stays last year surpassed the 700,000 mark between January and October. ITB Berlin this year is a rare opportunity so EMBRATUR and its membersare concentrating on the Olympic Games taking place in Rio de Janeiro in August; it is an invitation to Europeans to attend this event where sport and tourism become integrated. This integration between Brazil and Germany has already started and is supported by the German National Tourist Board (GNTB), responsible for promoting the country in Brazil, and with an office in Sao Paulo. More and more Germans are expected to visit Brazil.

Tourism and Olympics: a perfect match The potential of the internal travel market and opportunities for Brazil to attract more foreign visitors - especially with the high exchange rate and the proximity of the 2016 Olympics - are some of the points highlighted in this interview by Folha do Turismo with the Minister of Tourism, Henrique Alves. He pointed out that, the same thing happened in the 2014 World Cup, the Olympic and Paralympic Games can encourage foreigners to visit other cities in addition to Rio de Janeiro, the main competition headquarters. “At this time, when the high dollar encourages Brazilians to travel within the country and it attracts foreign tourists, we must invest in communication. We want them to understand the Olympics are in Rio, but they can visit other parts of Brazil. The tourists who come here to watch the games can be motivated to go to the Northeast, the North and the South. This is the time to interact. May tourism and the Olympics form a perfect marriage from the city of Rio”, he says. With five months to go until the Olympic Games, we can prove that the choice could not be more right. “Residents and visitors of Rio de Janeiro can see a city in full transformation,” says the minister. The Olympics have accelerated required historical investment. Out of the US$ 11.5 billion invested, only US$ 1.85 billion goes to specific infrastructure for the Games. The rest are legacy improvements for the city. “The transformation in Rio de Janeiro will be complete only with the participation of people from all over the world, as the Olympic symbol unites the world in the five coloured circles. He believes that the initiative will especially benefit travellers from the United States, which, after Argentina, exports more tourists to Brazil. According to the project, the exemption can be made through a joint decree of the Ministries of Tourism, Foreign Affairs and Justice. It will benefit foreigners entering Brazil until 18 September 2016, for a period of up to 90 days. “The most passionate country about the Olympics with multiple Olympic champions, is the United States. Henrique Alves recalls that the relay of the Olympic Torch, which from May 2016 to the eve of the opening ceremony of the Games will visit about 300 cities across the country. It will be a great opportunity to promote national attractions. “A team from the Federal Government is working to prepare Brazil for the relay. This is a key strategy for mobilizing the country around the Games and will help us to amplify image gains. Our idea is that the route of the torch turns into a great tourist event, with organized cities, decorated streets and our public making a difference once again for our hospitality”, he says. Countdown to the biggest sporting event in the world In just over 120 days, Brazil will host the first Olympics Games ever staged in South America, representing an historic importance for the continent and for the Olympic movement. Since it was announced as host, EMBRATUR (Brazilian Tourism Institute) has developed operational strategies to promote Brazil and attract more foreign tourists. It is estimated that between 350 and 500 thousand visitors will travel to Brazil before, during and after the Rio 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games. According to Vinicius Lummertz, the president of the Institute, international events held since 2007, such as the Pan American, Rio+20, the Confederations Cup, the Military Games, the FIFA World Cup and now the Olympics, have raised the level of the country worldwide. “Brazil has taken a strong political and institutional position. With the Rio 2016 Olympics we will increase the domestic flow of tourists and beat the record of international visitors. Great events are unique opportunities for the country and stand out in the international market as this competition is big”, said Lummertz. Casa Brasil (Brazil House) - Tourists will have the opportunity to visit the Casa Brasil, a venue dedicated to providing information about the country during the Olympic and Paralympic Games. It will occupy an area of Pier Mauá, in the centre of Rio de Janeiro. The initiative is a partnership between EMBRATUR and other federal agencies and here visitors will find information on culture, Brazilian destinations and tourism products.

The program, which was broadcasted in the United States, had live participation of the President of EMBRATUR, Vinicius Lummertz. Promotion initiatives - In tourism fairs and during Brazil’s worldwide promotional initiatives, EMBRATUR has dedicated its time advising potential visitors about the various destinations and national tourism products, that foreign visitors enjoy in Rio but that they should also visit other Brazilian cities. During the 2014FIFA World Cup, Brazil received a million foreign visitors, who spent US$1.5 billion during the competition. MICE - Seeking to position Brazil in the event segment and exalt its diversity and capacity to carry out the Olympics and Paralympics, the EMBRATUR MICE website (www.visitbrasil.com/ mice) has been redesigned. Visitors to the site now have detailed information about the Brazilian cities that will host the Games. Easier to navigate, the platform offers information on events, related research centres, accessibility, infrastructure and weather. “All our initiatives seek to contribute to the legacy that will remain for future generations: the image of Brazil consolidated as a nation ready to be one of the five largest economies in the world”, said Lummertz. For the 1st half of this year, press trips focusing on Rio 2016 are scheduled. Journalists from the main vehicles of the priority markets for EMBRATUR will be invited to visit cities around Rio de Janeiro and the cities that will host football games at the Olympics.

Between 5th and 21st August, the Marvellous City will host the Olympic Games and from 7th to 18th September the Paralympic Games. This is the first time that the world’s biggest sporting event will be held in the region. This is a unique opportunity to show everyone the great potential of the destination both for sport and for tourism. With a budget estimated at around R$7 billion, the Olympics promise to change the way foreign visitors see Brazil and revolutionize the number of tourist arrivals, as has happened in the past with other host cities, like Barcelona and London. One of the best success story cases, that show how hosting the Olympic Games can completely transform the vision of a city, is Barcelona, which hosted the mega event in 1992. Jordi William Carnes, CEO of Barcelona Tourism, is categorical: “Such an event is an excuse to change and improve the city”, he says. Jordi Carnes points out that before the Olympics, Barcelona

was relatively unknown in the world, as well as having a 20% unemployment rate and living in an economic crisis. So it was necessary to remodel the airport, telecommunications, public transport, the urban area of the city, even the beach had to be modified. “We made a structural change to the city for the purpose of improving the quality of life of our citizens. We created four Olympic areas, opened the city to the sea, recovered the seafront and created 16 secondary venues. We built 4.5 thousand new apartments, in four Olympic villages”, he enthused. After the 1992 event, the city became known worldwide and for the first time, was included on the most visited cities in the world list. The number of hotel rooms increased from 13,352 rooms in 1992 to 34,689 rooms in 2014. The number of tourists, in turn, increased from 1.8 million in 1992 to 7.9 million in 2014.

According to Chris Lynn, vice president for North America and Emerging Markets of London & Partners, the company responsible for organizing the Olympic Games in London, to undertake a the mega event, the company studied the last cities that hosted the Olympics in order to learn from them. “We needed to learn from the Olympics history, but you can also learn from the most recent event that happened here in Brazil, the FIFA World Cup to see what can be improved”, encourages Lynn. During the Olympics, Lynn points to four factors that need concentrating on. “We must be attentive to the media, leisure tourism, events and conventions and business that can be generated during the Games”, he explains. He said it was important to show that the city is available for business during and especially after the mega event.

New sports - The Rio 2016 Games mark the return of two Olympic sports: Golf, after 112 years without appearing at the Olympics, and Rugby, after 92 years. Paralympians have two new sports that are making their debut at the Games: Canoeing and Triathlon. Transportation - Rio de Janeiro has two main airports: Galeão and Santos Dumont in the city centre. Both have bus and taxi transport systems. One of the new projects in the city that is being constructed for the Games, is the Light Rail vehicle (LRV). The transport system will connect the Novo Rio Bus Station to the Santos Dumont airport and will run through the city centre.

There will also be connections with the metro, trains, ferries, BRT’s (Bus Rapid Transit), conventional buses and the Providência cable car stations. Another public transport system is the BRT, which is a bus service with exclusive bus lanes using articulated buses: the BRT Transcarioca passes through 27 neighbourhoods and connects the suburb of Barra da Tijuca to Ilha do Governador; BRT Transoeste connects Barra da Tijuca to Santa Cruz and Campo Grande, in the West Zone; BRT Transolímpica links Deodoro to Recreio. Furthermore, the underground will have more stations with the opening of Line 4, providing a new route: Barra da Tijuca – Ipanema, in addition to the existing Lines 1 and 2.

Rio 2016 can be the greatest boost in the history of sport and tourism in Brazil

Eric Ribeiro

n the year that, for the first time, the Olympics are being staged in Latin America, Brazil sees the realization of this major event as an opportunity to arouse the interest of other countries in order forRio de Janeiro (host city of the Games) and the country as a whole to achieve greater visibility in tourism and global industry events. According to Carlos Arthur Nuzman, president of the Organizing Committee of the Rio 2016 Games, the main bodies responsible for Tourism management, such asthe Ministry of Tourism, EMBRATUR, RIOTUR and entities working for the growth of the industry in Rio, know that the Olympic Games are putting the city in the shop window and can be a greatboostfor the country.

Carlos Arthur Nuzman, president of the Organizing Committee of the Rio 2016 Games

FOLHA DO TURISMO- What is the great legacy that a big event like the Ol ics can lea e for Rio de Janeiro and Brazil? Carlos Arthur Nuzman - The 2016 Olympic Games are sustainable from an economic point of view and are committed to creating a legacy and the transformation of the city. The population benefits of urban change, athletes inspire young people and the country goes to a new level. Rio is already a better city because of the Games and will be an example of one of the cities that has changed the most in Olympic history. For every Real (R$) invested in sports venues, five are intended for legacy projects. But the benefits ofthe Games go beyond Rio de Janeiro. We are talking about major stimulus for sport and tourism across the country, generating new business and the professional training of thousands of people.

FT –Do you believe that the city is able to offer a good standard of service to thousands of tourists? Carlos Arthur Nuzman - Rio, Brazil and South America will host, for the first time, the largest celebration of world sport and we are steering the organization responsibly and we are fully aware of the complexity of this mission. The interest from the world has led the city and the country to greater visibility in tourism and global industry events. Rio 2016’s accelerated growth is transforming the city. Government agencies related to tourism, such as the Ministry of Tourism, EMBRATUR, RIOTUR and entities working for the growth of the industry in Rio,know that the Olympic Games is putting the city in the shop window and can act as a great boost for Rio de Janeiro tourism - which will establish Rio as a global city. This may be a unique opportunity to make Rio the greatest tourist reference on the continent.

“Since the victory of hosting the Games, in 2009, we have looked to establish Rio de Janeiro as an increasingly professional city in regards to major events. We work together to establish fair prices for hotels that will host Olympic fans. Moreover, Rio is experiencing a new moment with respect to its hotel industry. ”

INTERVIEWS

FT - How do you analyse the importance of the partnership between Tourism and Sport? How can both segments benefit from mega events like the FIFA World Cup and Olympics? Carlos Arthur Nuzman - Sport has been a great tourist ow generator, not only because of the participating athletes, who need to move around, eat and stay close to every competition; but mostly because of the passionate spectators travelling to watch their idols and favourite sports. With the expertise that it has gained from staging major events such as the FIFA World Cup and the Olympics, Brazil has expanded its ability to attract and host major events. And with the Olympic Games, which offersvenues and infrastructure for world championships in 42 sports, and the Paralympic Games, with 23 sports, Rio de Janeiro has gained asporting infrastructure compared to other global cities. The state capital will be able to claim and expand the range of events and sportscontested annually in the country. The legacy plan for the Games will keep several sport venuesthat can be used both by high-performance athletes and local people. The population of Rio love sport and that’s part of the lifestyle that visitors like to experience when in Rio. And the Games will further stimulate this behaviour; after all, it is good for health and well-being. A good example is the golf course we have in Barra da Tijuca. The existence of the international standard course stimulates tourism related to sport, which is an important market today. We must also remember that the beautiful images of Rio will be transmitted to the whole world. Billions of viewers around the globe will be watching the Games. There is no better promotion. FT - How do you evaluate the urban mobility? Carlos Arthur Nuzman - - The city is prepared. The improvement of the transport system is one of the main legacies of the Games, with the Metro Line 4 and the BRT (Bus Rapid Transit). The city recently announced a mobility plan to facilitate movement during this period –there will be about 260 km of priority lanes in the city, prioritising

Carlos Arthur Nuzman

athletes and officials to arriveat competition venues. All sports venues will be accessible by BRT, metro or train. FT - What is being done to avoid problems with the safety of athletes and tourists? Carlos Arthur Nuzman - The Special Secretariat of Major Events of the Ministry of Justice, headed by the Secretary Andrei Rodrigues, is in charge of security. The Integrated Anti-terrorismCentre has already been implemented, that brings together police, public security and intelligence agencies, which will promote the exchange of information, training and learning. Police from various countries are collaborating with us. The mutual cooperation between countries is essential. In 2015, Brazil sent about a hundred police officers abroad to learn the best practices for major international events. About 10,000 men from the National Public Security Force will go to Rio. In total, 85,000 professionals will work intensely in the months of August and September, during the Games. Brazil hosted a sequence of events that did not happen anywhere else, which has allowed us to progress and mature. FT –Is the city ready to host tourists who will come for the Games? Carlos Arthur Nuzman - Since the victory of hosting the Games, in 2009, we have looked to establish Rio de Janeiro as an increasingly professional city in regards to major events. We work together to establish fair prices for hotels that will host Olympic fans. Moreover, Rio is experiencing a new moment with respect to its hotel industry. In 2009, the city didn’t even have 30,000 hotel rooms. In 2016, it will have 60,000, according to the Brazilian Association of Hotel Industry (ABIH). This expansion is good for events. The options have increased, hotel chains around the whole world have arrived, and competition improves the quality of facilities and balances prices. This is another legacy of the 2016 Rio Olympic Games. To ensure that all types of audiences will go toRio, the Rio 2016 Committee has a partnership with Airbnb, its alternative hosting partner, which contributes to expanding available options for consumers and a betterbalance of prices.

“Rio de Janeiro today is a better city because of the Games and will be an example of evolution in Olympic history. I can cite also as one of our main legacies enabling people to organize events on a high level of professionalism and excellence”

FT – How willtheincrease inBrazil’s visibility and the visa amnesty contribute to the arrival of more tourists? Carlos Arthur Nuzman - The federal government is easing entry restrictions. Visitors from Canada, the United States, Japan and Australia won’t need a visa to get into the country. These countries are major emitters of tourists and we are certain that it will positively in uence Rio de Janeiro. We will have more visitors and therefore more people will speak well of the city, tell family, friends, share the beauties of Rio on social media around the world etc. During the Games, we will have athletes from 206 countries in Rio and a global audience of five billion people FT - What is your evaluationabout Rio’s infrastructure and services? Carlos Arthur Nuzman - Rio de Janeiro today is a better city because of the Games and will be an example of evolution in Olympic history. I can cite also as one of our main legacies enabling people to organize events on a high level of professionalism and excellence. We also have a commitment to local prosperity and partnership with SEBRAE, which encourages the participation of micro and small enterprises in the event. The goal is to transform Brazilian companiesinto more competitive ones and make them able to compete on equal terms against global companies that are already used to dealing with major events.

There is no other way to start, it has to be with Christ the Redeemer and Sugar Loaf Mountain, the two main attractions of the city. But elsewhere, there are other places that also deserve your attention. There is nothing better than relaxing on the beach accompanied by a beer or a lime caipirinha. The busiest beach in the capital is Ipanema, but Copacabana and Leblon also vie for tourists’ attention. To escape the crowded sands, the West Zone offers 18 km of blue sea and fluffy sand, especially the beaches of Barra da Tijuca, Recreio, Prainha and Grumari. In the city centre, there are colonial buildings from the early 19th century, such as the Municipal Theatre. Opened in 1909, the theatre was inspired at the Opéra de Paris, in the French capital. Other buildings to see are the Centro Cultural Banco do Brazil, built in 1906; the Museum of Fine Arts; the Tiradentes Palace and the Imperial Palace. locals looking for the best of Rio’s nightlife. Nightclubs, venues with live shows and bars are always crowded with people dancing to traditional samba, or even electronic, rock, pop, forró and other styles. Practically next door, Santa Teresa attracts hipsters. Street art exhibitions, workshops, bars, gourmet food and craft beers are present in the area. Copacabana and Ipanema in turn attract tourists interested in a more sophisticated evening in restaurants and bars with refined decorations and fine cuisine. Surrounding the capital, coastal and mountain towns await those

who wish to know more of the state. One hour by boat separate Ilha Grande and the city of Angra dos Reis. On the island, diving, trails and a spectacle of natural beauty mark one of the most beautiful destinations of Rio de Janeiro. Among the most popular beaches, Aventureiro and Lopes Mendes stand out with titles of the most beautiful in the state, as they are more distant and isolated, and if you want to spend the night, you will need to camp. For those seeking more infrastructure and comfort, the village of Abraão is ideal. Guesthouses, restaurants and grocery stores are available for

visitors. Another destination that delights is Paraty, located 258 km from the capital. Its main attraction, which is present on nearly all postcards, is the historic centre, where the Baroque houses and cobblestone streets give a rustic atmosphere to the city. During the month of July, the city hosts the Book Fair of Paraty FLIP. Concerts, literary debates, book readings and famous authors are the attractions of this event that enlivens the city and attracts thousands of visitors every year. Close to the state capital, Petropolis presents to tourists the colonization period in Brazil, when the country was ruled by Portugal. Known as the Imperial City, the destination is home to the imperial palace built by D. Pedro II. Today a museum, its collection includes iconic pieces such as the famous crown of the emperor. Distributed in rooms, the museum reconstructs the family’s daily life in Petropolis and presents the cultural, political, social and economic aspects of Brazil in the 19th century.

Besides beaches, the urban area of Rio is being revitalized to welcome tourists, with new areas and cultural venues. In the city centre, you can enjoy the Porto Maravilha. The complex now has the Art Museum of Rio de Janeiro (MAR) and the Museum of Tomorrow, opened in December of last year, which explores the future of building possibilities. The location brings to the city, for the first time, the concept of an experiential museum, in which the content is presented in a sensory, interactive way and driven by a narrative. Examining the past, the venue features the present and explores possible scenarios for the next 50 years from the perspectives of sustainability and coexistence. Administrators expect 450,000 visitors in its first year of operation. The project required investment of over R$215 million through a public-private partnership. The five themed areas are based on scientific and existential questions like “Where we came from”, “About us,” “Where we are,” “Where we go to” and “How we want to go.” The collection is continuously updated, based on data and scientific analysis by institutions around the world, and was prepared with the participation of a team of more than 30 Brazilian and international consultants. The visit begins with the “Cosmos”, an immersive experience in a 360° dome, a large black egg where the public makes a sensory journey through the universe, from the most distant galaxies to microscopic particles. In “Earth,” three cubes, seven meters wide and seven meters tall represent the three dimensions of existence: Matter, Life and Thought. Here, visitors learn more about how the planet works, biodiversity, relations between species and the development of culture and human thought. The central part of the narrative journey is dedicated to think about today, its characteristics and its symptoms. Totems, over 10 meters tall, form the “Anthropocene”, with audiovisual content about the impact of human actions on the planet and the acceleration of its activities - studies show that humanity will have 10 billion people by 2060 and that the next 50 years will focus more on changes than the last 10,000 years. The “Tomorrows” are in an “Origami” shaped area, with three rooms. The area “We” closes the visit symbolically, with an experience of light and sound in a hollow wood sculpture. Its central element, a churinga (sort of amulet) from the Australian Aboriginal culture, is the only physical piece that makes up the main narrative and is the transmission of knowledge across generations. After this moment of reflection, one belvedere opens on the Bay and the renewed audience goes back to “Today”. The experience in the museum also includes the Tomorrow’s Activities Laboratory and the Observatory of Tomorrow.

Opened in 1974, the stadium had a capacity of 45,200 people. After the renovations that lasted from 2010 to 2013, its capacity was increased to 71,400. The name of the stadium is a tribute to the Brazilian idol ManéGarrincha, a world cup winner in the 1958 and 1962 FIFA World Cups. Football at the Olympics You can also learn more about the Metropolitan Cathedral that took twelve years to build because of the complexity of the project. The walls have acoustic vibration, so microphones are not necessarywhen during Mass, the voice of the priest can be heard perfectly at any point without having to change the tone or raise his voice, which takes two seconds to circulate to the other side. Other attractions in Brasília can be found in the Pantheon of the Country and Planalto Palace, built in honour of the former president Tancredo Neves and the heroes of the country. The Planalto Palace brings together works of art as Osorixás (The deities),Colhendo Bananas (Harvesting Bananas) and Praia do Nordeste (Northeast Beach), byDjanira; Burle Marx panel; AsMulatas, by Di Cavalcanti, and sculptures as O flautista (The Pied Piper)by Giorgio Bruno. Youcan join guided tours, in groups of 25 people, at weekends, and register your visit in the Signatures Book. Take home postcards anda leaflet with information about the Palace so you wont forget a thing. Faith - The Temple of Good Will, in turn, it is one of the Seven Wonders of Brasília, elected by popular vote and the most visited monument of the Brazilian capital, receiving more than one million peopleannually, according to official data from the Tourism Department of the Federal District. Here, people of all spiritual traditions and existing philosophies of life, including the nonreligious, have the opportunity to experience moments of peace and reflection in which art, culture and ecology are side by side with the

[ MIDWEST REGION ] ecumenical spirituality, in all environments. Another environment that delights the most passionate about astrology is the Planetarium, and Brasília also has its own! It is located in the centre of the capital, between the TV Tower and the convention centre. It was totally revitalized and includes exhibitions, workshops, lectures, film screenings, digital library equipped with computers with Internet access and wheelchair accessibility. Nature and gastronomy - Finding sun, tranquillity, grass and fresh water is also possible even in a city as cosmopolitan as Brasília. The Pontão do LagoSul(South Lake Jetty) is one of the places for those seeking relaxation. Considered the largest entertainment and leisure centre of the capital, the South Lake Jetty has great facilities, bars, restaurants and a beautiful view of Lake Paranoá. If you are hungry, the cuisine in Brasília reflects the history and the importance that the Brazilian capital has internationally. Because it is a young city, built by people from various corners of Brazil, its restaurants have the main regional cuisines of the country. And by attracting immigrants from around the world, international cuisine is also rich in options. One curiosity that Brasília has is that you can have lunch in the ministries, which is very interesting for those who are there pursuing civic tourism. There are restaurants in the ministries of Health, Agriculture, Transportation/Communications, Planning, Sports and at the Itamaraty Palace. The most famous spice is in the restaurant at the Ministry of Sports. Restaurants, at popular prices, open from 13h to the general public. Pontão

Y

ou are wrong if you think that the 2016 Olympic Games will only take place in Rio de Janeiro. Cities like Manaus, Brasília, Belo Horizonte and São Paulo are also included in this Olympic package, although only one event will be played in other corners of the country: football. The Arena of the Amazon, for example, will host three double games in the first round of the men and women’s football tournament, on 4th, 7th and 9th August. This is one more chance to develop tourism potential that is present in the Amazon, a legacy of the FIFA World Cup that will be used in 2016. At the time of the 2014 World Cup, hotels in the city offered around 23,000 beds spread over 100 hotels. This was a worry for Amazonastur, the State tourism company. Now, with the 2016 Olympics, there are more international arrivals and hotel chains will be prepared to reap good results in the Olympic month. During the World Cup Manaus was the host city with the cheapest hotel rate, compared to other cities that are also hosting football games. This is something that will be repeated and is good news for tourists. When hotels are this cheap, it is a good idea to go to the front desk and ask to stay for two or three days more to make the most of the attractions of the area. You will be in no doubt that it is worth delaying your return and staying a few extra days in Manaus. You will experience the amazing rainforest and learn about the history of the Amazonian capital and the gastronomy will also surprise you. A simple tour is also the most famous: a boat tour to the meeting of the Negro and Solimões rivers, which form the Amazon River and run side by side for six kilometres without the waters mixing – one is muddy and the other is dark. Another feature of this destination are the exotic hotels located amidst the forest, with good services and safety. There are many options of air-conditioned luxury hotels and there are also more rustic ones too that have their own charm. The variety of landscape makes Manaus one of the most favourite

Football at the Olympics destinations for nature lovers. By boat, you will enjoy the meeting of the waters, while canoes lead to creeks filled with native flowers and birds. On land, the attractions are related to the historical and classical buildings and tasty local cuisine. The typical fish of the region, such as peacock bass, bass and tambaqui, are the stars of menus in Manaus. The dishes are even tastier when inspired by regional recipes and prepared with ingredients like tucupi, ginger and cupuaçu. Don’t miss the Amazonas Theatre and have fun in Ponta Negra, a river beach that is 13 kilometres from the centre. It is also worth visiting the Anavilhanas Archipelago.

TOP 10 CURIOSITIES OF AMAZONAS 1. Amazonas is the largest Brazilian state. It’s the ninth largest worldwide subdivision, with a greater mass than the areas of Germany, France, UK and Japan combined. 2. The name Amazonas was originally given to the river by Spanish captain Francisco de Orellana, when he sailed down its entire length in 1541. Claiming to have found a tribe of warlike women Indians, and associating them to Greek mythology, he gave them the name Amazonas. However, according to alternative etymology defended by historian Karl Lokotsch, the Amazon name has indigenous origin, amassunu, which means “waters of noise, water rumbles.” 3. The economy of the state is based on industry, extraction, mining and fishing. Regarding the extraction, the big boost in economic life and colonization of the Amazon region occurred with latex exploration, during

[ NORTH REGION ] the rubber boom. 4. Much of its territory is occupied by forest and water. The access to the region is mainly done by water or air. Most of the state area is included in the Amazonian lowlands, 97% are in the so-called “drylands” and 3% in the “wetlands”. 5. Its extensive vegetation forms the largest tropical rainforest in the world: the Amazon Hileia. 6. Amazonas, Negro, Solimões, Purus, Madeira, Juruá, Içá, Uaupés and Japurá are its main rivers. In the Amazon region are the Amazon National Park, the Jau National Park and the Janauari.Ecological Park. 7. In Amazonas important export products are natural rubber latex, Brazil nuts, cocoa, rosewood essence, copaiba oil, natural guarana, cassava, maize and beans. Jute and black pepper, led by Japanese immigration are also popular. 8. In the Amazon is the world’s largest variety of fruits, among the best known are the açaí, cupuaçu, soursop and araçá-boi. 9. The cuisine has a base of cassava, whose techniques of planting and cultivation were brought by indigenous tribes. Cassava ends up turning into flour moorhen, beijus, manioc mush and porridges. Some Amazonian dishes are duck in tucupi, the tacacá and tambaqui stew among many others. 10. In the capital Manaus, which has the largest river port by cargo volume in Brazil. It was built on huge buoys to avoid flooding during the floods in the region, and today helps the Manaus Free Economic Zone, home to 430 companies, the majority are electronic products. inas Gerais is another state that will host football matches at the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games. The Mineirão Stadium, in the capital Belo Horizonte, will not only be the home for the games, but whole state ready to welcome and host tourists too. Behind all this preparation is the Articulation CenterMinas 2016, created in April 2015 by Governor Fernando Pimentel to undertake initiatives associated with events related to the games. There are three major actions that are driving the core strategies: attract delegations and Olympic and Paralympic committees to training sessions in Minas Gerais, host the Olympic Football Tournament and participate in the ‘Tour of the Torch’. Tour of the Torch - The Olympic torch in Minas will pass through 36 cities, starting on May 7 in Araguari and ending on the 16th in the city of Muriaé. Eight (Belo Horizonte, Itabira, Uberlândia, Patos de Minas, Curvelo, Montes Claros, Governador Valadares and Juiz de Fora) are the “celebration cities” where the torch will stay overnight and festivities will take place. Delegations - The state of Minas Gerais was the first to create a program, initially named Minas 2016, to attract foreign delegations and to host training camps before and during the games. The following delegations will have their bases there: Great Britain (Belo Horizonte); China and Canada (Juiz de Fora); Ireland, Serbia and Belgium (Uberlândia). Belo Horizonte has been the home of eight British teams since 2014, while Uberlândia has hosted the Irish Paralympic delegation. The athletic teams of China and Canada have chosen the Federal University of Juiz de Fora. The state also hosts the training centre for the Brazilian canoeing team in Lagoa Santa in the metropolitan region of Belo Horizonte. There are 25 mapped training centres (CTs) able to

welcome delegations for their preparation before and during the Games within the standards laid out by the International Olympic Committee, for the following events: athletics, basketball, wheelchair basketball, canoeing, fencing, Five-a-side football, artistic gymnastics, trampoline gymnastics, handball, equestrian, judo, weightlifting, swimming, wheelchair rugby, tennis, wheelchair tennis, beach volleyball and volleyball. Football - The state capital of Minas Gerais is one of the cities chosen to host Olympic football. A total of ten matches will be played at Mineirão, six women’s and four men’s, including the bronze medal game. The games will take place on 3rd, 6th and 10th(two games per day) and 12th, 13th, 16th and 20th August. The stadium was built in 1965 and was recently renovated for the 2014 FIFA World Cup. The venue is near the Pampulha Lagoon and monuments designed by architect Oscar Niemeyer. Varied tours in Minas Gerais Minas Gerais offer various tourism segments, such as Ecotourism, Cultural Tourism, Business Tourism, among others. In the state capital is the Mineirão Stadium, and close by, there are several tour options. The Modern Complex of Pampulha, with its reinforced concrete architecture, large windows and glass facades. The

venue has five buildings facing the Pampulha Lagoon. The buildings are the Saint Francis of Assisi Church; the Casino (now the Pampulha Museum of Art); Casa do Baile (current reference centre for Urbanism, Architecture and Design of Belo Horizonte) and the Yacht Golf Club (now Yacht Tennis Club), which were built almost simultaneously between 1942 and 1943, and the residence of the former president of Brazil Juscelino Kubitschek (currently Kubitschek House), dated 1943. Besides the state capital, options for tourism are vast. One is the Serra do Cipo, a part of the Royal Road tourist route. The Serra do Cipo has a varied ecosystem, with trails, rivers and waterfalls, this being just one of the options that ecotourism enthusiasts will find in the state. Historical Cities - For those looking to find out some history of the area, the historical cities route will transport visitors into the past, in cities such as Tiradentes, Congonhas, Ouro Preto and Sao Joao del Rei. Amid the hills and streets, architectural records are in places that were scenes of important events in the history of Brazil, such as the Inconfidência Mineira (Minas Conspiracy), besides being where the works of Aleijadinho were born. Culture and cuisine - Not far from the capital is the municipality of

Central Market

Brumadinho, which houses one of the most known sights of Minas Gerais: Inhotim, a venue that brings together a contemporary art collection and a botanical garden. Among the galleries and art pavilions of the institute, visitors will see art work by national and international artists, while the landscaping in the gardens is home to several plant species. Brumadinho, however, is not just a tourist attraction for its natural beauty. The city is also known for the production of cachaça, as well as its gastronomic diversity. This is another point that visitors cannot miss: the local gastronomy. One of the most known typical cuisines of Brazil, the cuisine of Minas Gerais is famous for the traditional cheese bread, dulce de leche, the various types of cheese, among many other dishes. en football matches, including three days with double games, will be held at the Corinthians Arena, in Itaquera, São Paulo, during the Olympic Games. The first game will actually take place before the Games’ opening ceremony, scheduled for August 5th, 2016. The city will host six games in the first phase, two in the quarterfinals, a men’s semi-final and the women’s bronze medal game. The last game in the Corinthians stadium will take place on August 19th. In the state capital, many attractions will offer entertainment and culture for visitors to the city during the Olympic Games. In addition to the Arena, which in itself counts as a great tourist spot in São Paulo, the Museum of Modern Art (MAM), located in Ibirapuera Park, keeps one of the most important collections of modern art in Latin America. Of course, talking about sport and the Olympics, we cannot forget to mention the Football Museum. The museum interactively tells, besides the history of football and each world cup, the history of the Brazilian people. Located at the Pacaembu stadium, another state football icon, the Museum preserves the imposing lines and reveals a bit of architecture, designed in the 30s. Other typical corners of São Paulo also vie for tourists attention, such as the neighbourhood of Liberdade (Liberty), the Paulista Avenue – ideal for shopping, and the Art Museum of São Paulo (MASP). To enjoy the best of the insatiable nightlife of São Paulo, Vila Madalena is the best neighbourhood for bars, clubs, live shows and restaurants. For an ‘underground’ tour, the centre and the Augusta Street offer good options. In the best Brazilian style, the rest of the state has endless

Football at the Olympics possibilities. Beaches, mountains, cold and warm weather, culture, tradition and adventure combine to add to a state that is marked by diversity. Guarujá - Among the most famous destinations of sun and sand, the highlight is Guarujá. This is where Brazilians flee to when temperatures rise and the only relief is to bury your feet in the sand and cool off in the sea. The busiest point is the Enseada Beach. Stretching 5600 meters, it is the largest beach of Guarujá, boasting calm and clear Football Museum waters. For those seeking a more reserved and less trendy area, then a good trick is to enjoy the beautiful days on Tombo (Tumble) Beach. It stretches for 900 meters and takes its name from the geological formation, which, along with its the sand, could lead to the inattentive to take a ‘tumble’. The beach is the setting for national surfing championships and is a popular location for training. Voted one of the most beautiful, the beach of Pernambuco has a privileged view of the Island of Arvoredos (Groves). The island inspired the dream of the engineer Fernando Eduardo Lee. Lee dedicated much of his life to scientific research in the area, where he developed experiments on fauna and flora, turning what was once a simple rock, into an “Enchanted Island” or “Shangri-Lee,” as he called it, with several species (some rare) animals, birds and plants. Ubatuba – In the north of the capital, Ubatuba brings together the most beautiful natural landscapes. There are more than 70 beaches, with options ranging from white sands and shallow water beaches, such as Perequê-Açu, to small private ones, like Puruba. For surfing, the most desirable is

[ SOUTHEAST REGION ] Caio Pimenta

Itamambuca. Besides being reserved, its waves provide an ideal experience for surfers. Among the busiest is Grande Beach, which is very popular with families, surfers and those looking for a little hustle and good food by the sea. The regional divers go to Fortaleza Beach, known for its calm waters. To get in touch with nature and recharge the batteries with amazing and very quiet scenery, there are still deserted beaches: Praia da Fazenda, Prumirim, Ubatumirim, da Lagoa, Figueira, Aguda and others. In Ubatuba it is also possible to explore islands, waterfalls and forests. The Serra do Mar State Park in Picinguaba and the State Park of Anchieta Island collaborate in the preservation of the rich Atlantic forest that still exists in the region. Campos do Jordão - To enjoy colder temperatures, Campos do Jordão, with its German style houses, attract many visitors during the winter seeking cooler climates with a European atmosphere. The city has a strong gastronomic appeal with fondue, wine, cheese and chocolate are just some of the delicacies that are consumed during the coldest season of the year. Not to mention the craft beers, like the traditional BadenBaden, which is produced on site. The city also offers typical attractions of small cities like steam train rides, a tram and cable car, as well as horseback riding and visits to gardens. For the adventurous, there are tours for adrenaline junkies, such as the jeep ride to Pedra do Baú or quad bikes (ATV) on dirt roads that lead to waterfalls, are the most suitable. Regardless of what you choose to do, all the tours end up in trendy Vila Capivari, where you will find plenty of restaurants, designer shops, cafes and crowded outdoor bars.

The cultural roots are remarkable in the Craft Fair of Pajuçara, with several possibilities for home wares, clothing and souvenirs. And if you feel a little hungry, you can indulge in someauthenticNorth-eastern cuisine: couscous and tapioca are sold in kiosks at the fair. On the border of Alagoas and Sergipe, along the banks of the São Francisco river,Penedo is considered as one of the most beautiful historic cities in the country. Founded in the 16th century, the city bears the marks of the colonial period of Brazil in its buildings fromthe 17th and 18th centuries. For those who like to know about the past of regions where they visit, then a good choice would be to visit the Imperial Palace, which records the beginning of the city, and housed emperor Dom Pedro II, during his visit to the state in October 1889. To get to know more of the natural beauty you can take a boat ride that leads to the mouth of the Velho Chico (now the São Francisco river), in the neighbouring municipality of Piaçabuçu. The Amazon forest, sea and desert dunes with white crystalline lagoons are some of the exotic beauties found in the state, which is located in the northeast of Brazil. Although the main attraction is ecotourism, the rich folk culture and festive customs of Maranhão also provide an atmosphere of hospitality and attracts lovers of art. In June, for example, visitors can have fun at the St. John party, which has the main folkloric show in the state, the dance of the Bumba-MeuBoi. Costume preparations and attractions occur year round. Carnival is another lively party option and is interesting to check out, in addition to several traditional dances, such as the Creole drum. As the area is closed to traffic, tourists can walk toGrande Beach. With sunshine throughout the whole year, Maranhão has about 640 km of beaches;it has the second longest coastline in Brazil. The island of São Luísoffers some of the most beautiful beaches with mangroves, dunes, low vegetation and urbanized seafront. But the most popular attraction is thestunning scenery of the Lençóis National Park, commonly called the Brazilian desert. Once there, you can walk or go by jeeps - provided by travel agencies - in the company of a local guide. The best time to visit is from May to September, when the lakes are at their fullestinterspersed between the sand dunes. Another option is to go down the Preguiças River, which borders the park, and visit the villages of Atins and Mandacaru. It is also essential to visit Chapada das Mesas National Park, which includes buriti(moriche palm) forests, wildernesses, red plateaus, canyons and caves. At more than 10 kilometres long and home to several other beaches, Pipa was discovered by surfers in 1970. The beach stands out for its warm waters - typical of the northeast –, which, gently, touch the white sand, massaging the feet of those who enjoy walking by the sea. Its name is given by a stone located at the end of the Afogados (Drowned) Beach, whose shape is similar to a kite (pipa in Portuguese means kite) Visit Madeiro Beach, sheltered under huge cliffs, whose reddish and yellow tones reflect in the calm waters with an emerald-green tone. Once, access was by a 160 stepped wooden staircase, giving a rustic feel to the place, Madeiro is a more secluded beach, almost deserted, reminding us of sceneries from Hollywood films, such as “The Blue Lagoon”. For a real show with acrobatics and pirouettes, be sure to visit the Curral Beach, popularly known as the Bay of Dolphins. Nearby, the Amor (Love) Beach, a loversfavourite, is proof that nature can also be romantic. This is because it is in the shape of a heart. ocated in the extreme south of Brazil, Rio Grande do Sul is the state that has the most European immigrants in the country. It is the coldest state of Brazil, something that can be seen in the culture and customs of the region. Quality of life is one of the most outstanding points and from the coast to the mountains, its inhabitants are proud of their way of life. Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul’s capital is synonymous with diversity. While representing modernity, with business centres and international quality events, it preserves a historic centre with buildings and centuries-old architectural complexes, such as the Iberê Camargo Museum. Other places to visit in the capital are the Rio Grande do Sul Memorial and Rio Grande Art Museum. Located on the shores of Lake Guaíba, the city has a wide choice of accommodation, restaurants and events available to visitors. Parks and green areas also stand out, such as the Moinho de Vento (Windmill) Park. Serra Gaúcha is the historical stage of Rio Grande do Sul. With its beautiful scenery and remarkable cultural traits, it shows traces of German and Italian settlers in its architecture and people. Gramado and Canela are two of the most sought after in the region. Lavishing European architecture and natural beauty, they are true spectacles of nature and the mild temperatures provide a more welcoming environment. At Christmas, Gramado becomes even more beautiful. Illuminations, decorations and shows are an attraction in itself in the city also known for its chocolate factories. Bento Gonçalves, the “capital of grape and Brazilian wine”, is also a popular town in the region. The thematic tours to the wineries, especially during the harvest season, from January to March, promote an encounter with nature and local culture. Another city related to grape and wine is Caxias do Sul. It is there that the most traditional party in the south of the country takes place, the Festa da Uva (Grape Festival). The event brings together the cold weather, grapes and wine, making it a rich feast of traditional foods, hospitality and varied attractions. The Route of the Missions is a chance to travel back in time. Rich in detail, the route tells the story of the Sete Povos (Seven People). Buildings, soil and vegetation provide the feeling of being on the stage of the former Jesuit Province of Paraguay, currently distributed across the borders of Mercosur. You can also delve into history on the Uruguay River, which provides many water activities along its 150 kilometres.
